Wordsmith

A project a client requested to promote and assess basic language skills, syllables, and memory. The 3 resources were made to assist them with this task. They requested a basic “checklist” for syllable knowledge, of being able to break words down into smaller sounds. For example breaking the word “Cat” down into smaller chunks, such as /c/ and /at/. If they were able to break words down then they could try modifying words, removing and adding sounds to make a new word.

  • “Cat”, take away the “C” sound and add a “P” sound to make “Pat”

This grew into “Wordsmith”, where a child could be ‘tested’ on their ability to remove, and add sounds to change words. It is also linked with common phonological errors by age, and is graded in difficulty.

The final part of the project was to create a small memory test, in combination with attention. This involves remembering a small phase or sentance of information. Different questions are asked to ascertain memory, and attention. Questions vary between items to ensure the child has paid attention to all the information, and not selected parts to attune too. These are graded in difficulty, and questions gain complexity or quantity of information. It also involves testing auditory working memory.
