Stop Making Yourself Unhappy
We are often reminded of all the things we should be doing to improve ourselves, our careers, our relationships, and even our appearance. But being proactive in improving some of our daily habits isn’t the only aspect of our lives we should be managing. It’s also important to be aware of the things you should stop doing. Today, DLG Support Services shares some tips to get you started on the right path toward the happiness you deserve.
Break Your Negative Way of Thinking
Negative thinking comes to us unbidden. We don’t consciously court negative thoughts, but too often, they are our fallback way of thinking. Once that negativity raises its ugly head, we then begin looking for things that validate it, thus setting up a vicious cycle.
Instead, we need to find ways to break that cycle, like replacing a helpless thought with an empowering one. Too often, we blame outside forces for our negative emotions, such as I don’t like my job, my relationship, my home, etc. Once you accept 100% control of your life, you’ll find it easier to change the way you think about it. Recognizing that you have the power to change how you feel about your life by replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, you start a new cycle of positive changes in your life.
Stop Unhealthy Habits
We all indulge in one or more habits that we know are bad for us. Whether it’s a dangerous habit, like smoking or consuming an unhealthy amount of alcohol or living a sedentary life, that can lead to multiple negative health consequences. Bad habits are ways we comfort ourselves, albeit in a bad way.
Recognize what triggers your bad habit so that you can replace that negative activity with a positive one that you’ll find comforting in its place. For instance, if you’re having a bad time at work and your first comfort thought is to rush home and sit on the couch and binge-watch a program on tv, try going for a walk around the block instead, or spend 30 minutes at a local gym, since exercise releases endorphins that naturally improve your mood. Soon, that walk or workout will become your comfort habit instead of the television.
The same can be said for any negative habit, like having fun preparing a healthy meal instead of grabbing fast food or learning a new hobby instead of consuming alcohol or tobacco.
Stop Working at an Unfulfilling Job
In a study from State of the Global Workplace: 2022, sixty percent of people reported being emotionally detached at work and 19% as being miserable. You don’t have to keep doing a job you’re miserable doing.
Getting a degree in a career you know would make you happy doesn’t mean leaving your current job to return to school full-time at a campus. For instance, getting an online degree in business can help you begin a career in just about every industry, especially healthcare and technology. Another online degree with multiple options is in the field of computer and technology.
And getting your degree online means that you can take classes at your own pace and oftentimes complete the program much quicker than in-person learning
Stop Putting Your Dream on Hold
Are you one of the three in five people in the country who dream of owning their own business? Research from Vistaprint found that worry over finances and a fear of failure are what stop most people from actually taking the steps to start their own businesses.
But another big factor is in coming up with an idea that speaks to what you really want to do. You may think the only way to have a successful business is to create the next new big thing, but that’s not the case. If you love what you do, your passion will be the thing that will drive it to success. Remember, most business ideas are spin-offs of ones that already exist. And your business idea doesn’t even have to be a big, shiny, exciting one. By giving people what they want, even if it’s just a mundane task, you can make a huge success of it by filling that need.
Recognizing that you’re in control of what makes you happy or not, what makes you feel fulfilled or not, and what your future will look like is all up to you. And not only what you do but what you must stop doing can mean finally living the life you were meant to live.
